Biography Context – Wartime Service and POW Experience
Endre Kovács, a dedicated Hungarian Ragged Guard officer during the late 1930s and World War II, played a key role in defending Hungarian interests in Transcarpathia and later during the Siege of Budapest. Captured by Soviet forces near the end of the siege, he was interned at Camp No. 95 (Usman) in the Voronezh region, as confirmed by his registration card in the Hungarian National Archives’ “Szovjet táborok magyar foglyai” database. This primary source provides official documentation of his captivity within the Soviet POW system.

After returning to Hungary following the war, Kovács was subjected to a mock trial by the Hungarian Soviet authorities and executed in 1949. The combination of his Ragged Guard service, wartime actions, and documented POW experience illustrates both his dedication as a soldier and the hardships he endured under Soviet captivity and post-war political repression.
